HOW TO SAVE YOUR DOG’S LIFE

I have been caring for your pets for more than twenty five years as a Zoo Keeper, an Animal Services Officer and as a Veterinary Technician.
I have seen dozens of dogs needlessly hit by cars and attacked and killed by other dogs whose owners never thought it would happen to them. I have seen the suffering that the dogs experience and the heartbreak their owners go through. Please do not let this happen to you. Whether your dog is in Florida or somewhere else
You can save your dog’s life by following a few simple steps:

1. NEVER let your dog outside without you attached to one end of a leash and your dog secured to the other end in a harness. (Except in a fenced yard).

2.When taking your dog outside always use a harness  and not a collar. You should avoid step in and expandable mesh harnesses. The expandable material in the mesh harnesses can  not hold your dog securely and the step in harnesses are difficult to fit properly. An H style harness is your best choice. Remember it needs to fit tightly to work properly.  Your dog can slip out of a collar in a few seconds and be gone forever

3. Do not rely solely on electric “Invisible fence” type fencing. It is not effective for all dogs and is not as reliable as a physical fence.

4. Inspect your fence regularly for any damage or gaps that would allow your dog to escape.

5. Always have your dog’s identification attached to their harness or collar at all times (yes even inside).

6. Use a collar only for the purpose of attaching your dog’s identification or a fashion statement, but never for attaching a leash.

7. Have your pet micro chipped. Make sure you choose a chip that is recognized by your local shelter.

8. Please keep your dog on a leash. Remember you can control your actions, but you can not control the actions of those who may harm your pet, like speeding cars, other dogs, coyotes, etc. Use a harness and leash.

  1. Gentle Leaders work through 2 values: Power and Oppression. They don’t TEACH anything – learning hypothesis is based off of results, both good and bad. Best Leaders do not provide results; they give enough torque in the handler’s arm to actaully FORCE the pet into the desired position.

  2. Let me address some of the concerns in the previous comment.
First let’s clarify what the “Gentle Leader” is. The “Gentle Leader” is a type of head halter that as the writer mentioned moves the head of the pet in the direction you desire them to go. They pose a substantial risk of injury to your pet as well as risk of escape should they become frantic. Head halters are training devices that should be used only by trained professionals in a controlled environment.

The harness is the proper tool for restraining your pet companion while walking them and must fit snugly in order to work properly. If you desire a harness with greater control look for one with the leash attachment in the front rather than on the top. An excellent example is the Freedom no pull harness https://freedomnopullharness.com/

  3. Hey Bobspetsitting,
Maybe a little off topic, however, it sounds really bad, thats she does it but it was her fault.
my dog has always been food orientated and has always loved and gone after food.
but 5 years ago, she found &she swallowed a lolly-pop on a stick that went into her intestine and ended up piercing it, she had to have a life saving operation and the majority of her intestine had to be removed, so now she has to be on sensitive dry food if she eats normal dog food she’ll have a loose stomach &so you can imagine the mess.
now she does not stop loking for food, sniffs everywhere around the kitchen trying to find bits and bobs, after youve finshed eating she run to where you were and try and find bits, she’ll watch you while you eat and give you her paw to beg, she even tries cilmbing on the counters to snatch food and she hangs around wen ur cooking and this is a constant rountine for her, i just want to break the habit becuase its exetremely annoying . we say “no!” and send her away try to distract her,
    any useufl ideas?
    Great Job!

  4. Sorry to hear about your canine family member being injured. Try putting some of her food in a kong or similar type toy. She will have to chew on it to get the food and it will keep her busy. You may also consider consulting an experienced dog trainer.

  5. Another aspect of the invisible fence is that it gives you a false sense of security for your dog, especially a small dog.

Though the invisible fence may dissuade your small dog from leaving your property, it does nothing to dissuade an animal on the outside from entering and doing harm to your defenseless (or fence-less) pet.
